I understand that, but that being said, WHY are they selling DEFECTIVE discs?

When I paid $65, I expected this game to last me for MANY, MANY Years as all my other games, NOT 4 months! I still have games from PS2 that still work to this day, even gamecube scratched up games work no problems.

When a Game was just bought a few months ago and it is still in MINT condition, then it just stops working FOR NO REASON, and other ppl are complaining to them about the same thing, NINTENDO NEEDS TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE and TAKE responsibility!

As much as you think there are a bunch of people with defective discs: There isn't. Defective discs happen. But unless the failure rate is significant (like, over 10%), then it's considered perfectly acceptable.

The only reason you think there's a lot is because you're specifically LOOKING for complaints. People are more vocal about complaints than praise. You won't see people posting in reviews "My disc works great, thanks Nintendo!". They're ONLY going to post if their disc doesn't work, which causes selection bias.

It's not like these defective discs are sold on purpose. Nintendo doesn't know they are defective.

SO basically what you are saying is that SCREW those 10 or so ppl who paid $65 and got defective discs.

It dont matter if its 50%, 10% or even 0.0000001% defective rate, NO ONE DESERVES THIS!

Also you said that they dont know?  Well they do, because I ASKED and they told me that they have had this complaint before...

3d world loads and then just sits there.  Tried cold restart three times.  changing games didn't  work.  We just bought the system with mario kart 8, which works great.  3d world is just not working - first day we used it.  I'm pretty upset. My daughter and I really looked forward to playing together after her birthday party.

I'm really sorry you and your daughter are having problems instead of fun playing this game, but perhaps you should give a call to Nintendo's 1-800-255-3700 (6 am ~ 7 pm Pacific, everyday) Customer Service number, or use their webform to contact them, and one of the service representatives will be able to determine if it is a game or console problem and advice on what the best thing to do is, repair the console or exchange the game.

I've faced the same problem with Black Ops 2 and Mario Kart 8

I'm quite disappointed with Wii U QC. I have supported Nintendo hardware since 1988 (NES).

All Nintendo hardwares are durable (my N64 lasted almost 10 years!) and none had major issues except wear and tear.

BUT WII U is as strong as a TOFU!

Less than 1 year, and already having some major hardware/software issues.

I love Big N games and hardware, but I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!

The same thing happened to myself.

I called Nintendo and tried to see if they could help. It seems like it's more or less them telling us that it could either be

It's the console.(I don't see why in this case every other game I have in my library that is a Wii U game works and loads perfectly)

It's the discs.

(Can't be that because Super Mario 3D World isn't the only game that will not load. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze displays a error message saying that the game is dirty and must be cleaned, to that I re bought the same two games all over again and the same thing still happens to both, with Mario 3D World freezing right at loadup)

Or it's save files

(They had me delete update files for Donkey Kong and then had me reinstall them to see if the game will play. Super Mario 3D World DID NOT HAVE A UPDATE FILE TO DELETE. That did not solve the problem whatsoever.)

My guess is that something is bricking the System itself within it's data files because if Nintendo has us deleting save files and update files I can only deduce that that is the actual problem. I bought my Wii U 2 years ago (PAID THE ORIGINAL RETAIL VALUE BEFORE THE DROP) and then this happens. I take good care of my consoles, I've seen people throw the Wii U around like it's nothing and thiers still works. I hope this gains Nintendo's attention fast because I can't afford to repair my system if nothing is wrong with it. I feel like this is something that can be patched in a System Update. I love both those games and it sucks I can't play them anymore.

Same issue, stuck at splash screen

fixed it by cleaning the disk with LCD screen cleaner.

I can report identical issues as TONY-ATL.  I had already cleaned my disc as recommended by others but decided to try again.  With a microfibor cloth I polished the back of the disc, there weren't any scratches or smudges but I thouroughly went over it again anyway.  Then put the disc back in the Wii U and it played perfectly.

Although this does concern me as to how sensitive the discs are and that my kids are the ones typically handling them, a thorough cleaning fixed the problem this time.

I had the exact same problem.  I bought mario 3d world at gamestop(Abilene, TX) used for 50+ bucks and then found it a month later for 18 at a salvage store(Gulfport , MS)both copies are in mint condition. I bought the second copy because it was a good deal, and was gonna sell it to my friend for 20 bucks...pass on the savings. Anyway, both copies didn't work (one copy the mario 3d icon would appear bUT when i cliked it it told me the disk was dirty or scratched, and it wasnt. The other one just gave me a "?" And said unknown disk). I thought maybe it was my wii u but all my other games worked flawlessly. I brought the one game back to gamestop (Bay St. Louis, MS) and they gladly exchanged it for a different copy. It works perfectly.  I exchanged the other one as well and it too works perfectly.  I do believe there must have been a bad batch. I have never had a manufacturers disk not ever work but one other time(original xbox halo 2002 or 2003). Anyway, but to have 2 bunk copies back to back of the same game from 2 different states and store is kinda wierd. Glad the 2 copies work now! Hope this story helps.
